How Character Counting Works
Counting characters sounds simple โ every letter, number, punctuation mark and space is a character. But platforms like Twitter/X and SMS use slightly different definitions, and Unicode characters (such as emojis) can each count as two code points. Sigify reports all of the following so you can choose whichever definition matches your use case:
- Characters (total): Every Unicode code point, including spaces and line breaks.
- Characters without spaces: Total minus space characters.
- Characters without whitespace: Total minus spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Letters (uppercase + lowercase): How many alphabetic characters, broken down individually.
- Digits: Count of numeric characters 0โ9.
- Spaces: Count of space characters alone.
- Words: Whitespace-separated tokens.
- Sentences: Separated by ., !, ? (with smart-quote awareness).
- Paragraphs: Separated by one or more blank lines.
- Lines: Line break count + 1 (for the current line).
- Special characters: Anything that is not a letter, digit, or whitespace.
